Do You Love Roy Orbison?

for Women Writing History: A Coronavirus Journaling Project.

December 22

I’ve been listening to a lot of Roy Orbison songs lately because my novel (I have three of them) that takes place in the 60s that I am re-working, well my main character is at a bar where Roy Orbison is playing on the jukebox. I listen to his voice while I’m writing and I think: this is what a miracle is. This is perfection. This is beauty. I also feel this way when I listen to Eddie Vedder or Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin. Their talent is beyond me. Sometimes I can write a paragraph that I really love and I think wow, I hit it! This miraculous  feeling doesn’t happen that often, actually very seldom, and that makes it even more special. I think: how did I do that, and it seems like divine intervention.

In terms of the virus, we were doing so well for months, but now California has more new cases of the virus than any other state in the union. Here’s other things I’ve read. One out of every 80 people in LA County has Covid. One out of 80. Think about that. LA county ICU beds are at 0%. We’re averaging over 44.000 new cases a day in our state. We’re screwed.

  1. I do that sometimes. My novel is set in the 50s-60s and their music gets me into the zone. Even the lyrics can help with a scene.
There are some 60s Facebook groups that regularly post memories and photos from that era. They’re really helpful too.
